Description

This French Onion Ground Beef Rice Casserole is creamy, cheesy comfort food made easy. Savory beef, tender onions, fluffy rice, and a rich French onion–mushroom sauce bake together under a golden cheddar-mozzarella topping—perfect for busy weeknights and delicious leftovers.

Ingredients

Scale

1 lb ground beef

1 tbsp olive oil

1 small yellow onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 cups cooked white rice

1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup

1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup

1 cup sour cream

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish.

2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook 3–4 minutes until softened.

3. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant.

4. Add ground beef and cook 6–8 minutes, breaking it up, until browned. Drain excess grease if needed.

5. Season with salt and black pepper, then stir in Worcestershire sauce.

6. Add cooked rice, cream of mushroom soup, condensed French onion soup, and sour cream. Stir until fully combined and creamy.

7. Spread mixture evenly in the prepared casserole dish.

8. Top evenly with cheddar and mozzarella.

9. Bake uncovered 25–30 minutes, until hot and bubbly and the cheese is lightly golden.

10. Rest 5 minutes. Garnish with parsley if desired and serve.

Notes

Make-ahead: Assemble up to 24 hours ahead, cover, refrigerate, then bake (add 5–10 minutes if baking from cold).

Rice tip: Day-old rice works best, or cool freshly cooked rice before mixing so it stays fluffy.

Protein swap: Use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.

Cheese swap: Swiss or provolone adds extra “French onion” flavor.

Storage: Refrigerate leftovers up to 4 days; reheat until warmed through.
